Mykola Leontovych (b.1877, Monastyrok – d.1921, Markivka)
Outstanding composer, choral conductor, pedagogue, and public figure.
Recognized worldwide for composing the popular and critically acclaimed Shchedryk/ The Carol of the Bells. He died tragically in 1921, at the age of only 43.
Mykola Leontovych was born on December 13, 1877 in the village of Monastyrok, Vinnytsia Oblast.
His father was a village priest, skilled at playing cello, violin and guitar.
Mykola Leontovych was born on December 13 in the Monastyrok community near the village of Selevyntsi in the Podillya region of Ukraine.Leontovych received his first musical lessons from him. Leontovych attended the district primary school in Sharhorod. From 1892 until 1899, he attended the theological seminary in Kamianets-Podilskyi, where he began to study Ukrainian music and made his first attempts at choral arranging.
Upon graduation, he did not become a priest but chose teaching as his profession.
